SmartSource Compact vertical units are selected according to nominal capacity, calculated heating/cooling load, airflow, water-loop conditions, and installation requirements.
4Most Energy does not recommend selecting a WSHP simply by matching square footage or replacing an existing unit with the same tonnage. The correct model depends on the served zone, envelope, glazing, occupancy, ductwork, entering-water temperature, and available water flow.

1. Site Assessment We inspect the existing equipment, installation space, water loop, electrical supply, ductwork, controls, and condensate arrangement.
2. Load Calculation & Unit Sizing The required capacity is determined from the actual served zone rather than simply copying the existing equipment size.
3. Equipment Recommendation 4Most Energy recommends the appropriate SmartSource Compact vertical size and configuration based on the application.
4. Installation Scheduling Once equipment, materials, and installation requirements are confirmed, the installation is scheduled.
5. Existing Equipment Removal Where applicable, the existing heat pump is disconnected and removed safely.
6. Vertical Unit Installation The new SmartSource Compact vertical unit is positioned and connected to:
- Supply and return water piping
- Ductwork
- Condensate drain
- Electrical supply
- Low-voltage controls
- Thermostat or control system
7. Safety Testing The system is checked for proper electrical operation, water flow, condensate drainage, controls, and safety functions.
8. Final Commissioning The system is operated through heating and cooling modes and checked for proper airflow, water flow, temperature performance, and control operation.

Frequently Asked Questions
What is a vertical water source heat pump?
A vertical water source heat pump is a floor-mounted HVAC unit that transfers heat between the building and a water loop. It can provide both heating and cooling using the same equipment.
Where is the SmartSource Compact vertical used?
Daikin identifies applications including schools, offices, lodging, condominiums, retail facilities, new construction, existing buildings, and replacement projects where space is limited.
Is the vertical SmartSource Compact available in different sizes?
Yes. The Compact family covers sizes from 007 through 070, corresponding to approximately ½ through 6 tons.
Does it use R-32 refrigerant?
The current Daikin SmartSource Compact platform uses low-GWP R-32 refrigerant.
Can it be used with geothermal systems?
Yes. Daikin identifies SmartSource Compact as configurable for both geothermal and boiler-tower applications.
Can 4Most Energy replace my existing water source heat pump?
Yes. 4Most Energy can assess an existing unit and determine whether repair, replacement, or a different configuration is appropriate.
Can you repair the existing unit instead of replacing it?
Yes. If the existing water source heat pump is serviceable, repair may be considered instead of replacement.
How do I know which size I need?
The correct size should be determined using the building or zone load, airflow, water-loop conditions, ductwork, and electrical requirements. 4Most Energy can assess these factors before ordering.
Does the vertical unit require ductwork?
Yes. The vertical SmartSource Compact is a ducted water source heat pump and must be connected to an appropriate air distribution system.
Does it require a gas line?
No. A water source heat pump uses electricity and a water loop rather than a natural-gas combustion system.
Does it require a cooling tower or geothermal loop?
It depends on the application. The system can be configured for standard boiler-tower water-loop applications or geothermal applications.
Does it require a condensate drain?
Yes. Cooling and dehumidification operation can produce condensate, so the installation requires an appropriate condensate drainage arrangement.
