If a McQuay horizontal water source heat pump is suspended above one of your ceiling tiles or panels right now, it’s almost certainly a legacy unit — McQuay was folded into Daikin Applied years ago, and its ceiling-hung horizontal WSHPs are still running in offices, retail spaces, and condominium suites across Ontario. 4Most Energy repairs, services, and sources parts for existing McQuay horizontal units, and supplies and installs their modern factory replacement — the Daikin SmartSource® line — when a unit is beyond economical repair.

Servicing McQuay Horizontal Equipment the Right Way — McQuay Water Source Heat Pump Repair Toronto & GTA

McQuay's horizontal WSHP was built for ceiling-suspended installation above the drop ceilings and drywall access panels common in offices, retail units, and condo suites — a compact, low-profile cabinet with a coaxial heat exchanger, vibration-isolated compressor, and interchangeable panels that let airflow be field-modified for straight or end discharge. That design is why so many horizontal McQuay units are still in service decades after installation. But equipment longevity doesn't mean equipment immunity — coaxial exchangers scale, PSC blower motors wear out, MicroTech controls drift out of calibration, and a legacy nameplate with discontinued parts availability makes correct diagnosis and sourcing the deciding factor in repair versus replacement.
4Most Energy services McQuay horizontal water source heat pumps across Toronto and the GTA — McQuay horizontal water source heat pump repair Toronto, McQuay WSHP parts Ontario, ceiling-hung water source heat pump service GTA — with licensed refrigeration technicians who work above ceiling tiles and through drywall access panels on a daily basis. Where a repair touches the unit's condenser water loop connections, ductwork, or electrical service, that work is completed to Ontario Building Code and ESA requirements, not just patched. And where a unit is at true end-of-life — compressor failure on an older refrigerant charge, unavailable parts, or persistent comfort complaints the original unit was never designed to solve — 4Most Energy supplies and installs its direct factory-line replacement, the Daikin SmartSource® Compact, Plus, or Premium horizontal unit, matching your existing water loop and duct connections for a clean swap in the same ceiling cavity.

Warranty

Repairs to existing McQuay horizontal units are covered under 4Most Energy's standard labor and parts warranty at time of service. Replacement with a new Daikin SmartSource® unit carries Daikin Applied's standard 12-month parts warranty from start-up (or 18 months from ship date, whichever occurs first), with extended coverage up to 4 years available at purchase.

McQuay horizontal units in the field today range widely in age and condition — the right next step (repair, parts sourcing, or full replacement) depends on details a phone call can usually settle faster than a form. Before we quote, we'll ask:

  1. Is this a repair call, a parts inquiry, or are you exploring replacement — and what's the visible model/serial info on the unit's nameplate (a photo of the ceiling access panel helps)?
  2. What's the specific issue — no heat/cooling, unusual noise, water leak, control fault, or a scheduled-maintenance visit?
  3. Roughly how old is the unit, and has it had major service or parts replaced before?
  4. What is the current condenser water loop configuration — standalone system or a shared building loop?
  5. Is the served space's ductwork and duct collar tie-in original, or has it been modified since the unit was installed?

Request Your Free Assessment — 4Most Energy will diagnose your McQuay horizontal unit, source parts, or scope a SmartSource® replacement with a licensed technician, typically within one business day.

  • Coaxial heat exchanger engineered for efficient heat transfer across the unit's service life.
  • Vibration-isolated compressor and heavy-duty insulated steel cabinet, reducing noise transmission into the occupied space below.
  • Large blower with PSC motor, sized for consistent airflow through the coaxial exchanger and existing ductwork.
  • Interchangeable discharge panels allowing straight or end discharge to be field-modified, simplifying retrofits into existing duct layouts.
  • Flush water fittings, minimizing shipping damage and simplifying condenser water loop hookup.
  • MicroTech® controls (standalone or networked), depending on unit generation — many older units run MicroTech II or III.
  • Standard range (55°F–110°F) and extended/geothermal range (25°F–110°F) water loop compatibility, depending on original unit specification.

Sizing Guide

Sizing only applies when McQuay horizontal equipment is being replaced rather than repaired. Because production-era McQuay units were sometimes sized differently than current best practice for a given space, 4Most Energy performs a full load calculation and ductwork/water flow verification before recommending a replacement size and configuration. In most cases, replacement equipment is a Daikin SmartSource® Compact, Plus, or Premium horizontal unit — WSCH/WSDH, WSMH/WSNH, or WSSH/WSTH depending on the space's noise, humidity, and efficiency priorities — sized to match the space's current requirements, not simply matched to the outgoing McQuay's nameplate rating.

For repairs and parts service:

1. Diagnosis on-site inspection of the unit through the existing ceiling access panel, water loop, controls, and electrical connections to identify the fault.
2. Parts sourcing  locating compatible parts for the unit's specific generation.
3. Repair and testing component replacement or repair, followed by performance verification (flow rate, temperature differential, control operation).

For full replacement (McQuay horizontal to Daikin SmartSource®):
1. Site assessment existing unit inspection, water loop and electrical evaluation, ductwork condition check.
2. Load calculation and unit sizing confirm correct SmartSource size, tier, and discharge configuration.
3. Ceiling access and lift setup open the ceiling tile or cut a drywall access panel above the unit and position a lift to safely reach and support the equipment.
4. Isolation and disconnection  lockout/tagout of electrical and water loop; safe removal of the old McQuay unit, with refrigerant recovery if applicable.
5. Suspension and mounting  new hanger rods, brackets, and vibration isolators installed to structural requirements.
6. Water piping and ductwork connections braided stainless supply/return hoses, isolation valves/strainer, condensate drain with trap, and duct collar tie-in with acoustic lining.
7. Electrical connection ESA-compliant hookup to the building's dedicated circuit and disconnect.
8. Commissioning Check, Test & Start per Daikin Applied protocol, with warranty registration filed.
9. Ceiling close-up, patch, and paint the access opening is closed, drywall patched, and painted to match the surrounding ceiling before the crew leaves site.

Because McQuay horizontal units in the field span a wide range of production years, warranty status on any individual unit needs to be confirmed against its service history rather than assumed — most are well outside any original manufacturer coverage.

4Most Energy's repair work carries our standard service warranty at time of completion.
Ongoing maintenance follows the same fundamentals as any water source heat pump:

Filters should be checked and changed on a regular schedule (every 60 days is a reasonable starting point, adjusted to the space's actual dust/lint load); the condensate drain pan should be inspected and flushed annually; hanger rods and vibration isolators should be checked during scheduled visits, since a suspended unit puts more demand on these than a floor-standing one; and water loop strainers and isolation valves should be inspected regularly, particularly on older units where mineral scale in the coaxial exchanger is more likely. 4Most Energy offers scheduled maintenance plans covering all of the above.

Frequently Asked Questions

McQuay was acquired by Daikin and its water source heat pump line has since been folded into Daikin Applied's current product range. Existing McQuay horizontal units in the field are still fully serviceable, but new equipment purchases today are typically the Daikin SmartSource® line rather than a new McQuay-branded unit.

In most cases, yes — 4Most Energy sources parts for McQuay units of various generations. Availability depends on the unit's specific age and component; where a part is discontinued or difficult to source, we'll tell you upfront and discuss whether repair or replacement makes more sense.

It depends on the fault, the unit's age, and parts availability. Compressor failure on an older unit, discontinued parts, or a history of repeat service calls typically favor replacement; an isolated component fault on an otherwise sound unit typically favors repair. We'll give you a straight recommendation either way.

Yes, for a replacement or new install — the unit sits above the ceiling, so we open a tile or cut a drywall access panel, bring in a lift to safely support thUsually not — most repairs only need the existing access panel or ceiling tile opened, with no patching required. A full replacement sometimes requires enlarging or cutting a new drywall access panel, which we'll close, patch, and paint before we leave.e equipment, and close, patch, and paint the opening to match your ceiling before we leave. Repairs on an existing unit sometimes only need the existing access panel opened, with no patching required.

The direct factory-line successor is the Daikin SmartSource® horizontal series (Compact, Plus, or Premium, depending on the space's requirements) — see our SmartSource Water Source Heat Pump Installation Guide for how the tiers compare.

I was very pleased with the competitive pricing I got specifically from 4most energy. I contacted many companies to get their best quote. Sometimes there are even daughter or sister companies that will give you better quotes than the parent companies. It's best to check around for the identical product with installation from many companies. I was also pleased with the installers. They did have to cut away some insulation to install the Rinnai RX199 on the outside wall the house. Not sure if they should have tried replacing that insulation afterwards, but won't complain about the job they did because I think I got the best price on the market after getting quotes from about a dozen companies.

We recently had a Navien Combi boiler installed by 4Most Energy and had a great experience from start to finish. Rey was our sales representative and Sam was our technician, and both were excellent to work with. They arrived on time, the installation was fast and efficient, and everyone was friendly and professional throughout the process. Sam did a great job with the installation, and everything is working perfectly. We’re also very happy with the Navien Combi boiler itself. Overall, we couldn’t be happier with the service, the installation, and the product. We would definitely recommend 4Most Energy.

I contacted 4Most Energy to replace my 14 year old AC unit. Their intake process was smooth. They provided a reasonable quote the same day. The installation of the new AC unit was scheduled and the service provided by Farzad and his associate was completed within a reasonable time. They did a great job on the installation, hauled away the old equipment, and left the job site (both indoors and outdoors) in good condition. I would not hesitate to recommend 4Most Energy for your heating and cooling needs.

Great job Rey, Sam and team! My tankless water heater was broken for two months and after getting the run around from Enercare and Reliance, I decided on purchasing a Navien from 4Most Energy and they did a great job explaining the process and installing it the next day. Thank you for the top notch service!
